Quick note: anything ‘rock’ related was fair game for jokes this weekend. Detour on 101? Rock Road. Instagram topic? Dwayne Johnson. Looming geological feature which Mom and I spent hours reading about on Wikipedia? Morro Rock (it is actually super cool). Really – all we talked about this weekend was ‘rock’ in all its forms. Except when Mom (aka the super-sherpa) found a Great Blue Heron and was very sad she missed a picture and then was super-ecstatic when he was there a few minutes later.

I’m running the 5k and volunteering at the half – I actually raced in the Berkeley Half last year and now I am very confident that I know what not-in-half-shape feels like (so, what I feel like). Find me and the rest of OTC at the end of the Frontage Road (the 9 mile turn around)! I know we have a few teammates running so I’ll be thrilled to see them, and hopefully they’ll be happy to see us too because honestly, that out-and-back sucked last year. Like really bad. I’ll pretend we’re the light at the half-way point of the tunnel.
As for a 5k goal – according to Athlinks, which is an excellent resource if you haven’t used it before, my best 5k time is a 28:08. So I guess my goal is to break 28 minutes – 9 minute miles. I’ll let you know how that turns out.
You practice stuff so it isn’t as ugly on the actual event.
And today was a great example of that. I drove down to Jack London Square to get a feel for the run course this morning, and felt great on mile one. And then my stomach decided to give me the middle finger.
I have been really distracted since the Sandman. I was working on a run foundation all last week, hitting a solid two-mile loop for five days, but this week has been negligible at best. I swam hard on Sunday, and haven’t done much of anything else (active, at least) since. I have been diving deep into other exciting things, but unfortunately that precluded my race preparation.
What does this mean? This weekend: all Oakland, all the time.
Unfortunately, not in a good way. Right now, I’m using ‘bonk’ as a general term. Technically, I’m not sure what happened on my bike other than under-nutrition. My run was poor due to overwhelmingly strong side stitches. Just a rough day in general.
It’s the week before race day.
As you fall asleep each night, you’re thinking about your race. Your swim. Your sprint to transition. Your bike, your T2, and your run. Your finish.
You wake up on race day, ready to go.
And then its over.
I’ve been on a training plan written by Coach Raeleigh Harris for the Oakland Triathlon Club. We’re training for the Oakland Triathlon at the end of August. Her plan is fantastic, but jeez it’s kicking my butt.
If I could train full time, I’d have a great time with the plan, but unfortunately I do have to pay for things (like more triathlons), so I have to work. I often have to readjust which activity I’m doing and when, but that seems to be the glory of triathlon. Can’t make it to the pool? Then run! Don’t feel like running today? Get on the bike! Can’t handle the hills today? Cruise somewhere flat!
